Earlier this year, the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) shared a survey with electoral area residents, property, and business owners impacted by the 2021 extreme weather and flood events from November 14 to December 2, 2021.

351 people completed the survey and shared how they were impacted and received emergency information.

What we heard and how we’ll address the feedback:

  • FVRD’s evacuation orders and alert notices were sometimes hard to read. We will review the template to make the notices easier for the public to read and understand.
  • The frequency of posting information on social media and websites was not frequent enough. Staff will work to improve the frequency of public updates
  • The FVRD website and social media could be improved and be easier to navigate. Staff will review the emergency management area of the website and seek ways to improve it.

About the FVRD Emergency Operations Centre
The extreme weather and flooding events that occurred from November 14 to December 2, 2021, were, and in many cases, continue to be, a significant challenge for many residents, businesses, and travelers within the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD).

On November 14, 2021 the FVRD Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) was activated and immediately began monitoring and responding to many flooding and landslide incidents within the FVRD's eight electoral areas, requiring the involvement of more than 30% of the FVRD’s 104 employees.

More than sixty confirmed incidents of overland flooding and mudslides were reported to our EOC public inquiry line, resulting in a total of 27 evacuation orders and alerts impacting over 2,000 properties and an estimated 5,610 people.

    The FVRD is responsible for providing emergency management services to the electoral areas, while each member municipality (Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kent, Hope, Mission and Harrison Hot Springs) is responsible for providing these services to their residents. 

    The intent of this survey is to hear from those who reside in, own, or lease property within the FVRD's Electoral Areas.

    Those who reside in, own property or operate a business within FVRD's electoral areas are invited to share:

    • How you, your family, business or community were impacted;
    • How you received information; and
    • How the FVRD can improve its emergency response communications in the future

    The survey closes at 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 6, 2022.

    How long will this take? 

    Approximately 10 minutes. Please complete only one survey per household.

    What is the purpose of this survey?

    To evaluate how well the FVRD communicated to residents during the extreme weather and flooding events of November 14 to December 2, 2021 and help direct communication efforts during future emergency events.

    Can I skip questions?  

    Yes, except for questions 1 and 2.
