How do I find the zoning designation for my property?

Visit our Web Map and search for your property. Click on your property and a dialogue box will pop up. This box will show your current zoning designation and the applicable bylaw. Directly below will be the proposed zoning designation under the new bylaw. Watch our tutorial on how to use the Web Map to find planning information.

My zoning designation is different in the new consolidated bylaw. How will this affect me?

Through the consolidation process, 120 zoning designations were condensed down to 60 zones.  Even if your designation changed, it is important to note that when consolidated, existing permissions under each zone were retained.

Why doesn't the new consolidated zoning bylaw address secondary dwellings or cannabis production?

The zoning bylaw consolidation project focused on analyzing the existing regulations only. Any new regulations that may be required to accommodate secondary dwellings or cannabis production will be subject to a full public engagement process with area residents prior to inclusion in a zoning bylaw.

Why is the language in the new consolidated zoning bylaw so different from my area's original zoning bylaw?

We have nine different zoning bylaws that were written by different people at different times with the result that the language used to describe the same thing differs from bylaw to bylaw. A huge part of this project involved creating a common language by eliminating synonyms.

We also took this opportunity to incorporate best practices for drafting bylaws. This involved using lists and tables in place of long descriptive paragraphs. Although the language may be different in the new bylaw the intent is the same.

It's already difficult to find information in a zoning bylaw, won't it be even more difficult to find information in a bylaw that consolidates nine bylaws into one?

The new consolidated zoning bylaw will be much more user-friendly and will work in conjunction with our Web Map. For example, clicking on a property in our Web Map will give you the option to go straight to the consolidated zoning bylaw.
