What is a regional district?

    Regional Districts are federations of municipalities and electoral areas. Regional Districts evolve over time to meet the changing needs in and of each region. No two regional districts are the same as they offer different services based on their members’ needs. 

    What is the Fraser Valley Regional District?

    The Fraser Valley Regional District is a regional federation of six municipalities and eight electoral areas. The six municipalities are: City of Abbotsford, City of Chilliwack, Village of Harrison Hot Springs, District of Hope, District of Kent, and City of Mission. 

    The electoral areas are the unincorporated areas outside of municipal boundaries: 

    Electoral Area A (Boston Bar, North Bend, Canyon Alpine)
    Electoral Area B (Yale, Dogwood Valley, Sunshine Valley)
    Electoral Area C (Hemlock Valley, Harrison Mills, and Lake Errock.
    Electoral Area D (Bridal Falls, Popkum)
    Electoral Area E (Chilliwack River Valley)
    Electoral Area F (Hatzic Prairie, McConnell Creek)
    Electoral Area G (Deroche, Dewdney, Hatzic Island, Nicomen Island)
     Electoral Area H (Columbia Valley, Cultus Lake, Lindell Beach)

    The FVRD delivers over 106 separate services to over 333,000 residents (2016) in the Fraser Valley. The FVRD is the third most populous regional district, one of 27 throughout the province of British Columbia.

    • The FVRD is governed by a 23-member Board with eight directors elected by Electoral Area residents and 15 appointed from municipal councils.

    What are the regional district’s eight electoral areas?

    • The FVRD is responsible for governance, administration and services for the eight electoral areas, each named separately by letters of the alphabet A – H.

    • Each electoral area is represented on the board by a locally elected director.

    • Electoral area residents pay only for those services provided to the electoral area in which they reside.

    What services does the FVRD provide?

    The FVRD provides 106 services to approximately 330,000 residents. Services are provided on a regional, sub-regional or local basis.

    • Regional Services are provided to all municipalities and electoral areas for instance parks & outdoor recreation, air quality, transit (Fraser Valley Express), and solid waste management.

    • Sub-regional services involve two or more jurisdictions such as animal control services, Hope & Area Recreation Centre, and the invasive weeds program.

    • Local services are provided to electoral areas only including garbage and recycling facilities, fire protection services, planning & development services, and bylaw enforcement services.
