Let's Talk About Food Waste In Your Multi-Family Home

Why is it important to remove food waste from your household waste? Studies in Canada show that 47% of the food bill Canadians buy every week is thrown out. Besides being a waste of money, this food waste often finds its way to landfills.

Do you live in an apartment, condo, townhouse or strata development? We want to hear from you! Take the survey below and tell us about how compost is (or isn't) collected in your complex.

The Fraser Valley Regional District has a waste sorting bylaw that applies to all properties in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Kent, Mission, and all FVRD electoral areas (Bylaw 1495). The bylaw requires that all recyclable materials and compost (food waste) be sorted out of the garbage, be kept separate, and be delivered to appropriate waste processing or disposal facilities.

In most cities, municipal compost collection is provided to single-family residential homes but not multi-family (apartments, townhouses, strata complexes). While many complexes comply with the bylaw and have food waste collection, this is not the case for everyone. For those that haven’t, now is the time to start!
